Witch’s Fire Folktales (Online)

Survival stories for when it all
goes up in flames

6 weeks - 6 stories - 3 online meetings

My family has a famous story about my grandmother almost getting guillotined.

Mother of four boys in a minuscule flat, she was believed to have aborted (illegal in 1930 France, and punished by the death penalty).

What actually happened was : she suffered a miscarriage.
Got denounced by her neighbours.
Got Interrogated by the police.
But she lived to tell the tale.

When things get rocky I tend to turn to those big archetypal moments.

How do we get through the fire?

We’ll be following the tracks of a great Slavic witch to reflect on our own thresholds of challenge, unique and so universal.

When did we lose our way completely?
Find ourselves married to a beast?
Fall into an enchanted sleep for 6 months and wake up unsure how we even ended up here?

This is a slow-paced, contemplative journey that includes :
- a weekly audio recording of a Slavic tale.
- a forum to share what touched us in each of them
- an online meeting every 2 weeks to discuss the stuff of life : finding home, overcoming obstacles, being humbled, finding allies.

Which witch?

We’ll be traveling with the formidable Baba Yaga, great initator Crone of Slavic folklore.

She’s one of those beings that contain multitudes : she’s a murderer, cannibal, child kidnapper, a simpering idiot, and often a wise and generous helper on her good days.

Never a dull moment, as my mother would say.

Baba Yaga tests us hard, but her stories all have happy endings.
Her complexity invites us to visit the remote, unloved corners of our own nature.

My overall experience was deeply satisfying and nourishing; finding comfort in the fairytales, awakening awe and general lightheartedness to get through a tough winter.

I so enjoyed the riveting stories and inquiries you posted weekly. The deeper I involved myself, the more I got out of it. I was able to reflect on things that shifted or not in my own life. I was challenged to find the good when things felt so dark.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to add a bit of magic into their existence.

The stories gave me permission to own my weirdness and chaos, to abandon my anxiety to understand others and that they should understand me. Which feels like wow - such a relief.

I would recommend this to all kinds of witches and wizards who are interested in local Western shamanic traditions. It gives so many access points to create your own rituals. Nowadays everyone knows the South American things, the imported Pachamama songs and stuff. It’s so nice to get something from the European mysteries and reactivate that.

I trust Joy so utterly. Everything she touches turns to gold and becomes more filled with aliveness.

This container opened something in me that I’ve been missing lately. Everything has been feeling so heavy and dry, and I’m so grateful for Joy for bringing her magic into this. Sometimes I forget there’s so much more to life. I feel so nourished.

Nora

I loved it all - it was so delicious to indulge in laying down and listening to the stories really deeply…. the online calls just made me feel so connected with community across the world - something that I’ve been missing lately - and I really appreciated how it made me access the deeper heart shares.
