New eyes - morning after a laser operation

i have never seen the forest like this.

i have never seen

layer after infinine layer

of knife sharp leaves

slicing up into the air

like a chorus of Hallelujahs.

i could count each one,

my eyes feast on the delicate lace

of each distant branch of spruce

the tiles on the rooftops,

the hair on the squirrel’s back.

until yesterday,

all that was only a blur.

no magical implement

ever gave me access

to the loud brilliance of detail

now displaying its peacock glory to my gaze.

i repeat my sister’s scene,

who twenty years ago

walked around our home

newly bespectacled,

touching every single thing

anew

“oh… you look like this”

fire, it burned like fire

the brilliant laser sunset

Seared vermillion and acid gold,

tempered in lava

my eyes weeping oceans

everything afire

until dawn’s fingers

lightly pinched the flames away.

the roar silences.

i awake enfolded in

infinite softness,

spirit cleansed

Bone bare

as a low-tide beach.

peel off the pirate patches to

the impossible.

i can see.

life reaches gently through my eyelids,

touches the trembling silk of my being.

unfathomable.

this lifelong student of beauty

beholds her master

for the first time.

i can see.

life’s tender generosity

announced in every scratch on the wall,

in wave after wave

of complete quiet

as my body absorbs,

absolved and anointed

Clarity

  • not a word anymore

a revelation.

a secret garden,

now mine to walk

Every day I am given.
