rainbow-snatchers again
now that we walk on different sides of the sea,
along tidy rows of apple trees
or driftwood resting on veined shingles
our hands are magpie-busy
with this old,
dreamy ritual,
we pluck homespun diamonds from the hours
to show you
any casual wonder,
whatever catches the light
splits it into
curly strands of orange and turquoise
like you do
with my attention,
bramble-tangled in this mystery
and flower-open, lightly,
to what lies
in a song of that key
and if not plucked
it must be baked,
fresh daily,
like love and bread like to be,
scratch the belly of tranquil infinity
into fine slivers that can say
how it all
takes my breath away
i watch storms travel over the horizon
just like you and summer did,
today the sea’s dress is striped green blue and ash-grey,
fingers of frost wilt all our garden greens
while winter-blind we
chirp away,
sending pebble-offering
good-mornings,
the shoestring love tokens
that lovers and children
offer gladly
into the heart of splendour of the world
